Sunshine Division Opens at Halpatiokee Before Power Surge Cuts Debut Short

STUART, FL — After a season of waiting, PIHA hockey finally arrived at Halpatiokee Inline Hockey Rink on Saturday as the Sunshine Minor Division opened its 2026-27 season in Stuart, Florida.

The opening festival was scheduled as a six-game double round robin between three of the division's five teams — Unify Hooligans, Saucy Sloths and Florida Makos — with each club slated to face the other two twice.

For Halpatiokee, simply getting the event underway represented a milestone.

The Sunshine Division debuted last season, but its inaugural campaign came with its share of logistical challenges. Twice, events scheduled for Halpatiokee had to be relocated as installation of the rink's new Stilmat playing surface continued to be pushed back.

Saturday was finally supposed to mark the facility's PIHA debut.

And it did — just not quite for as long as everyone had hoped.

Four games were completed before a power surge in the surrounding area knocked out the rink lights, scoreboard and fans. With the facility unable to safely continue play, the final two games of the scheduled double round robin were postponed and will be completed at a later date.

Still, the four games that were played offered an entertaining first look at a Sunshine Division featuring three new organizations this season.

Two of those newcomers were in Stuart. The Saucy Sloths made their PIHA debut, while the Florida Makos, whose roster is made up largely of players from last season's Minor Kaos team, also played their first games under the new identity.

Last season's division champion Florida Crocodiles and fellow newcomer Buttery Roller Foundation were not part of Saturday's event.

Game-by-Game Recap

Unify Hooligans 3, Saucy Sloths 2 — Overtime

The first game played on Halpatiokee's new surface immediately delivered some drama.

The Saucy Sloths and Unify Hooligans were tied 1-1 after the opening half and remained even after regulation. Bruno Sano and Adrian Sosa scored for the Sloths, while Frank Muscarella and Brandon Oland answered for Unify.

That sent the first game of the Sunshine season to overtime.

Just over three minutes into the extra session, Max Scheiner scored the winner, with Oland drawing the assist, to give Unify the 3-2 victory.

Jeffery Coughanour stopped 14 of 16 shots for the Hooligans, while Roberto Richter made 19 saves on 22 shots for the Sloths.

Saucy Sloths 7, Florida Makos 5

The second game produced considerably more offense — and one of the day's biggest individual performances.

Florida jumped out to a 3-1 first-half lead, powered by Niko McCleod, who scored twice in the opening period and completed his hat trick early in the second.

The Sloths then completely changed the game.

After scoring only once in the first half, Saucy erupted for six second-half goals. Daniel Sosa scored five times in the game, including four during the second-half comeback and an empty-net goal with three seconds remaining.

Adrian Sosa added a goal and two assists, while Bruno Sano also scored as the Sloths rallied for a 7-5 victory.

McCleod was outstanding despite the loss, finishing with three goals and two assists, factoring into all five Florida goals.

Unify Hooligans 6, Florida Makos 0

Unify followed its overtime victory with the most complete performance of the afternoon.

The Hooligans scored three times in each half and controlled the shot count 25-9.

Frank Muscarella recorded a hat trick and an assist, while Max Scheiner, Jake Reilly and Alex Maslati also scored. Scheiner and Reilly each finished with two points.

At the other end, Jeffery Coughanour stopped all nine shots he faced, recording the first shutout of the new Sunshine Division season.

Florida goaltender Landon Daney faced 25 shots and made 19 saves.

Saucy Sloths 2, Unify Hooligans 1 — Overtime

The Sloths and Hooligans met for the second time, and somehow produced an even tighter game than their opener.

Neither team scored in the first half.

Brandon Oland finally broke the scoreless tie for Unify in the second, but Adrian Sosa answered for the Sloths with 1:30 remaining in regulation to send the teams to overtime for the second time in as many meetings.

This time, the result went the other way.

With only three seconds remaining in overtime, Bruno Sano scored the game-winner, assisted by Daniel Sosa and Adrian Sosa, giving the Sloths a 2-1 victory and an even split of the two-game series.

Goaltending dominated the contest. Allen Ruane stopped 13 of 14 shots for Saucy, while Ben Wiles made 20 saves on 22 shots for Unify.

Individual Standouts

Daniel Sosa — Saucy Sloths

Few players could have asked for a more memorable PIHA debut.

Sosa's afternoon was highlighted by an incredible five-goal performance against the Florida Makos, including four goals during Saucy's second-half comeback.

He then assisted on both Sloths goals in the overtime win over Unify, including Bruno Sano's winner with three seconds remaining.

Through three completed games, Sosa finished with five goals and two assists for seven points.

Adrian Sosa — Saucy Sloths

Sosa was remarkably consistent throughout the Sloths' three games.

He recorded a goal and an assist against Unify in the opener, followed with a goal and two assists against Florida, and then scored the late tying goal and assisted on the overtime winner in the rematch against Unify.

That gave Sosa three goals and four assists for seven points through the completed portion of the event.

Frank Muscarella — Unify Hooligans

Muscarella helped drive an impressive opening day for Unify.

After scoring in the overtime victory over Saucy, he erupted for a hat trick and an assist in the 6-0 win over Florida.

He finished the four-game portion of the event with four goals and an assist, while helping the Hooligans earn two victories in their three completed games.

Niko McCleod — Florida Makos

Florida's opening results may not have gone its way, but McCleod immediately established himself as a player to watch.

He accounted for all five Makos goals in their 7-5 loss to the Sloths, scoring a hat trick and adding two assists in Florida's first game under its new identity.

Brandon Oland — Unify Hooligans

Oland contributed at both ends of Unify's day.

He recorded a goal and an assist in the opening overtime win against Saucy, added an assist against Florida and then scored Unify's only goal in the 2-1 overtime rematch.

That gave him two goals and two assists through the Hooligans' three completed games.

Jeffery Coughanour — Unify Hooligans

Coughanour was excellent in both of his appearances.

He made 14 saves on 16 shots in Unify's overtime victory over the Sloths and then stopped all nine shots against Florida for the shutout.

Across those two victories, Coughanour stopped 23 of 25 shots.

An Early Sunshine Division Picture

Because Saturday's final two games could not be played, the opening-day standings remain incomplete.

Still, both Unify Hooligans and Saucy Sloths earned two victories in their three completed games, with their two head-to-head meetings fittingly split in overtime.

Unify won the first meeting 3-2 before Saucy answered 2-1 later in the afternoon.

The Florida Makos dropped their first two games, but their 7-5 battle with the Sloths demonstrated plenty of offensive potential — particularly from McCleod — before their remaining games were lost to the power interruption.

Those unfinished matchups will matter even more in a five-team division where every regular-season game can have a significant impact on positioning.

Halpatiokee's Long-Awaited PIHA Debut

The circumstances surrounding Saturday made the event about more than just wins and losses.

Halpatiokee Inline Hockey Rink was supposed to become a Sunshine Division home during the division's inaugural 2025-26 season. Instead, delays surrounding installation of the new Stilmat floor forced PIHA to relocate events on two separate occasions.

Saturday, that wait finally ended.

The new surface hosted its first four PIHA games, including two overtime finishes, a major comeback, a shutout and the first appearances of two new Sunshine organizations.

Then came another unexpected obstacle.

Following completion of Game Four, a power surge in the area shut down the lights, scoreboard and rink fans. With the facility unable to restore the conditions necessary to continue safely, league officials were forced to postpone the final two games.

It was certainly not the ending everyone envisioned for Halpatiokee's long-awaited debut.

But after waiting more than a season for PIHA hockey to finally reach Stuart, Saturday still represented an important step forward.

The puck officially dropped at Halpatiokee.

Four games are in the books.

And whenever the two postponed games are completed, the 2026-27 Sunshine Minor Division season will pick up from an opening day that proved memorable in just about every possible way.
