(SEMI) Iron Knights win Epic Thriller
The Iron Knights made big strides this season, going into the playoffs as the high seed in their opening match up. Their opponent, a perennial Atlantic power house, the Typhoon, who have had a bit of a down season by their standards. All that aside, the match up was set up to be a good one and it didn't disappoint. Game one was a back and forth affair, with the Iron Knights outscoring the Typhoon in the second period for a 4-3 victory. Game two would not disappoint either. It appeared the Knights were ready to skate away with the series sweep, up 3-1 in the second, but the Typhoon mounted a furious comeback and tied the game late to send it to overtime. For over six minutes the teams traded blows, until the Typhoon's Chris Kocher finished a 2 on 1 feed from Matt Engle to tie the series at one a piece. Setting up a game three, the teams went back to battle for the winner take all game. This time it was the Typhoon who struck early, scoring the games first two goals. Just before the half, the Knights cut the lead in half and went to the second frame down just one. Just three minutes into the second, the Iron Knights snuck an outside shot through a series of screens to tie the game. Both teams played tentatively, knowing the next goals was likely the series clincher, which would lead to a scoreless rest of regulation. Yet again the two teams needed overtime to settle things and this time advancing in the playoffs was on the line. Both teams had their opportunities, perhaps none more that Hershey's Hayden White, who saw the puck bounce over his stick on a tap in back door goal. But it was the Iron Knights who came out victorious, as the Groff brothers hooked up to send their team to the next round. Awaiting them is the Gladiators Sunday morning, with the winner set to go to Colorado for the PIHA Finals in March.
