Scoring Race comes down to wire

by Anthony Flynn

Unless someone puts on a serious late season charge, it seems all but a foregone conclusion that the Sting's Max Halverson (pictured) will win his first PIHA Pro scoring title.  However, it is a serious race to see who will take home the semi-pro scoring title this season.  Currently the Sting's Josh Weger (pictured) leads the league, but it's almost certain he will not finish in that position.  A handful of players are in close striking range, all with their final four game events left on the schedule.

In contention, just one point behind Weger, is the Deuce's Michael Strofe (pictured).  Strofe and the Deuces play their final four games at Inman, in the middle of a fierce three way fight for first place.  The Deuce's draw the last place Grizzlies twice and can benefit Strofe in the scoring column.

Also in the running is a player who needs no introduction, the Misfit's John Pinheiro (pictured).  Pinheiro is a former Pro League MVP and at age 41, doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.  Pinheiro and the Misfits finish their season at home in Rhode Island, where Pinheiro can feast on the rink's extra large surface.

Hershey Typhoon's Matt Engle (pictured), also finds himself in a position to finish on top of the scoring list.  While Engle has the most ground to make up, he and his team will finish the season in Pittsburgh and his advantage will be all three teams they face are in the bottom half of the standings.

Dark horse candidates include:  Wheel City's Trevor Cear, the Deuces Connor Ferrell, and a handful of candidates in the Rocky Mountain division like: Derek Pellett (Vikings), Trace Jablin (Tugboats), Phillip Hartman (Diesel).  It would be irresponsible not to consider Wheel City's Jack Lane.  He would need a monster weekend to overcome his deficit, but he has led the league in points per game, but has only played half of his team's games thus far.

The minor division scoring title, like the pro division seems all wrapped up by the Gladiators Nick Flagiello.
