PIHA Semi-Pro Season Opens with Eight-Game Showcase at 422 Sportsplex

POTTSTOWN, PA — The 2026-27 Professional Inline Hockey Association season officially got underway Saturday, September 19, as four Northeast Region Semi-Pro teams took the floor at 422 Sportsplex for an eight-game opening-day slate.

The Philadelphia Barons, Pottstown Space Force, New Jersey Jagaloons, and SK Marple Gladiators each played four games as the PIHA began another season of competition. The league, which has been in operation since its inaugural season in 2002, currently features Pro, Semi-Pro, and Minor levels of play.

Opening day produced plenty of close hockey. Five of the eight games were decided by a single goal, including an overtime thriller between Pottstown and New Jersey. Marple finished the day with the best record at 3-1, followed by New Jersey at 2-1-1, Philadelphia at 2-2, and Pottstown at 1-3.

Game 1 — Philadelphia Barons 3, Pottstown Space Force 2

The Philadelphia Barons earned the first victory of the 2026-27 PIHA season, holding off a late Pottstown rally for a 3-2 win.

Philadelphia built a 2-0 first-half advantage behind goals from Joe Brennan and Justin Brown. Dan Dolan extended the lead to 3-0 in the second half before Pottstown began to battle back. Justin Kratz put Space Force on the board and Pottstown added another late goal to close the gap to one, but the Barons were able to protect the lead to the finish. Pat Coll stopped 15 of 17 shots in the Philadelphia net.

Game 2 — New Jersey Jagaloons 3, SK Marple Gladiators 1

After a scoreless opening half, Marple struck first early in the second on a goal from Corey Kosick, but New Jersey responded with three unanswered goals.

Christian Hoppeler tied the game on the power play before scoring again to give the Jagaloons the lead. Eddie Dahdah added the insurance goal late in the half. Goaltender Jesse Little was outstanding, turning aside 22 of 23 Marple shots to secure New Jersey's first win of the season.

Game 3 — SK Marple Gladiators 4, Philadelphia Barons 3

Marple bounced back in its second game, rallying from a 2-1 halftime deficit to edge Philadelphia, 4-3.

The Barons received first-half goals from Keith Goodman and Sean Lloyd, while Ryan Ferrell kept Marple within one. Eric McHale tied the game early in the second half and Michael Strofe gave the Gladiators their first lead.

Philadelphia's Joe Brennan answered on the power play to make it 3-3, but just 12 seconds later Andrew Amodei restored the Marple lead. That goal held up as the game-winner, giving the Gladiators their first victory of the season.

Game 4 — Pottstown Space Force 5, New Jersey Jagaloons 4 — OT

The first overtime game of the new season turned into one of the most entertaining contests of opening day.

The teams traded momentum throughout regulation, with Stephen Groff, Justin Kratz, and Derik Semetti providing the Pottstown offense while John Hoppeler, Keith Henning, and the New Jersey attack kept the Jagaloons in the game.

Pottstown held a 4-3 advantage late before Jason Santoriello scored with the extra attacker to tie the game with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation.

In overtime, Semetti delivered the winner, scoring his second goal of the contest to give Space Force a 5-4 victory. Kratz also finished with two goals, while Christian Hoppeler recorded three assists for New Jersey.

Game 5 — SK Marple Gladiators 3, Pottstown Space Force 2

Marple and Pottstown followed with another one-goal battle.

After a scoreless opening half, Ryan Prybrokowski opened the scoring for Pottstown. Marple answered with goals from Dave Cutler and Wyatt Lando to take a 2-1 lead.

Prybrokowski responded with his second goal to even the score, but Eric McHale broke the tie late in the second half and the Gladiators held on for the 3-2 win.

Nikolas Tkacz made 17 saves for Marple, while Pottstown's Dann Steffens stopped 21 of 24 shots.

Game 6 — New Jersey Jagaloons 7, Philadelphia Barons 0

New Jersey produced the most dominant performance of the day in its third game, shutting out Philadelphia 7-0.

Christian Hoppeler led the offensive explosion with a hat trick and two assists for a five-point game. John Hoppeler scored twice, while Eddie Dahdah and Keith Henning also found the net.

At the other end, Jesse Little stopped all 14 Philadelphia shots to record the first shutout of the 2026-27 Semi-Pro season.

Game 7 — Philadelphia Barons 8, Pottstown Space Force 1

The Barons answered their shutout loss with an offensive breakout of their own, scoring four times in each half en route to an 8-1 victory over Pottstown.

Justin Brown recorded a hat trick and added an assist, while Joe Brennan collected a goal and three assists. Dan Dolan scored twice and Sean Lloyd added another goal as Philadelphia spread the offense throughout its lineup.

Stephen Groff scored the lone Pottstown goal.

Barons goaltender Jared Occhicone was strong behind the offensive outburst, stopping 22 of 23 shots.

Game 8 — SK Marple Gladiators 3, New Jersey Jagaloons 2

The final game of the afternoon featured two teams looking to finish successful opening days on a high note.

New Jersey jumped ahead 2-0 behind a pair of goals from Christian Hoppeler, but Marple quickly responded. Dave Cutler scored on the power play before Eric McHale added a shorthanded goal to bring the game even at 2-2.

The score remained tied deep into the second half before Corey Kosick scored the eventual game-winner.

The Jagaloons generated 26 shots, but Nikolas Tkacz turned aside 24 of them to preserve Marple's 3-2 victory and a 3-1 opening-day record.

Opening-Day Standouts

Christian Hoppeler — New Jersey Jagaloons

Few players made a larger impact on opening day than Hoppeler. Across four games, he totaled seven goals and five assists for 12 points. That included two goals in New Jersey's first win, three assists in the overtime loss to Pottstown, a five-point performance against Philadelphia, and both Jagaloons goals in the finale against Marple.

Joe Brennan and Justin Brown — Philadelphia Barons

Philadelphia's offense was paced by Brennan and Brown. Brennan finished the day with three goals and four assists, while Brown collected four goals and two assists. The pair combined for seven points in Philadelphia's 8-1 victory over Pottstown alone, with Brown recording a hat trick and Brennan contributing a goal and three helpers.

Corey Kosick and Eric McHale — SK Marple Gladiators

Marple received production throughout its lineup during its 3-1 afternoon. Kosick finished with two goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal against New Jersey in the finale. McHale scored three goals and added an assist, including the winner against Pottstown and a shorthanded goal in Marple's comeback against New Jersey.

Nikolas Tkacz — SK Marple Gladiators

Tkacz backstopped all four Marple games and finished the afternoon with three victories. His biggest performance came in the finale, when he stopped 24 of 26 shots against New Jersey. Across the four games, Tkacz faced 81 shots and made 71 saves.

Jesse Little — New Jersey Jagaloons

Little was equally busy in the New Jersey crease. His day included a 22-save performance in a 3-1 win over Marple and a 14-save shutout against Philadelphia. He finished the four-game event with 69 saves on 78 shots faced.

Derik Semetti — Pottstown Space Force

Semetti provided one of the signature moments of opening day. His two-goal performance against New Jersey included the overtime game-winner, giving Pottstown its first victory of the season after the Jagaloons had forced overtime with a late extra-attacker goal.

Early Standings Take Shape

With four games in the books for each of Saturday's participants, SK Marple Gladiators leave Pottstown at 3-1, giving them the strongest record among the four teams in action.

The New Jersey Jagaloons finished 2-1-1, combining a potent offense with the day's only shutout. The Philadelphia Barons went 2-2, bookending their afternoon with victories, while Pottstown Space Force finished 1-3, with its victory coming in overtime against New Jersey.

There is still a long way to go in the 20-game regular season, but Saturday provided the first look at what figures to be a competitive Northeast Semi-Pro race.

The Northeast Semi-Pro schedule resumes Saturday, October 10, when the league heads to Skate Safe America for the first major cross-division event of the season.

All 12 Northeast Region Semi-Pro teams will be in action, bringing the Metropolitan and Mid-Atlantic divisions together and giving teams their first opportunity of the season to measure themselves against opponents from the other side of the region.

After eight games, several dramatic finishes, an overtime winner, a shutout, and plenty of early-season offense in Pottstown, the 2026-27 PIHA Semi-Pro season is officially underway.
