PIHA Minor Season Opens Through the Storm at Skate Safe America

OLD BETHPAGE, NY — The 2026-27 PIHA Minor season officially got underway on Long Island Saturday, and not even a wild tropical storm could interrupt the action.

With difficult weather affecting Long Island throughout the day, there was understandable concern leading into the opening Northeast event at Skate Safe America. Once the teams arrived and the first puck dropped, however, everything went according to schedule.

All 24 games were completed without interruption as the six Metropolitan Division teams met the six Mid-Atlantic Division teams in the first crossover festival of the new season. Each of the 12 teams played four games across Skate Safe America's two rinks, giving both divisions an immediate early-season measuring stick.

There was plenty to digest by the end of the night. The Suffolk Sting and Labeda Qinetic Legends both finished perfect at 4-0, while the East Coast Capital Snipers, Empire State Rink Rat Legends and Long Island Rink Rat Blazers each earned three victories from the Metropolitan side. In the Mid-Atlantic, Champion Impact finished 3-1 to lead the way.

The day also produced four one-goal games, an overtime thriller, several big offensive performances and one shutout.

Game-by-Game Recap

Champion Impact 5, East Coast Rebellion 2

Champion Impact earned the first win of the event, building a 2-1 halftime lead before adding three more goals in the second half. Greg Kubrak led Impact with a goal and two assists, while James Kelly added a goal and an assist. Goaltender Brandon Morgenstern was excellent, stopping 22 of 24 shots.

East Coast Capital Snipers 10, Mid Atlantic Mystic Storm 3

The Capital Snipers made an immediate statement in their first game, scoring four times in the opening half and six more in the second. Dylan Marszaek scored four goals, while defenseman Brady Marszalek collected a goal and four assists for a five-point performance. The Snipers generated 32 shots in the victory.

Labeda Qinetic Legends 4, Fusion Blizzard 0

Qinetic opened its season with one of the day's most complete efforts. The Legends carried a 1-0 advantage into the second half before pulling away with three more goals. Sean Connolly stopped all 15 shots he faced for the shutout, while Jack Ryan finished with a goal and an assist and Sean Hart opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal.

Empire State Rink Rat Legends 6, New Jersey Jagaloons 4

The Jagaloons led 2-1 after the opening half, but Empire State erupted for five goals in the second to turn the game around. Bryan Conklin delivered one of the biggest individual performances of the entire event, scoring four times and adding two assists for six points.

Long Island Rink Rat Blazers 2, ISCA Grizzlies 1

The Blazers earned a tight opening victory behind first-half goals from Chris Giordano and Matt Clancy. ISCA pushed throughout the second half, but Long Island goaltender Collin Jacobs turned aside 17 of 18 shots to preserve the one-goal win.

Suffolk Sting 11, Tri-State Mach1 Dopermen 1

Suffolk delivered the first major offensive explosion of the afternoon. The Sting led 4-1 after the first half before pouring in seven unanswered goals in the second. Colin Hite recorded two goals and three assists, while Josh Roland scored a hat trick and added an assist as Suffolk opened with an 11-goal performance.

East Coast Rebellion 9, Mid Atlantic Mystic Storm 3

The Rebellion responded from their opening loss in a big way, scoring four times in the first half and five more in the second. Austin Natividad paced the attack with two goals and two assists, while Cole Laforce recorded two goals and an assist. Justin Rossi made 20 saves in the victory.

Fusion Blizzard 7, East Coast Capital Snipers 1

After being shut out in its opener, Fusion responded emphatically. The Blizzard held a 2-1 lead at halftime before scoring five unanswered goals in the second. Mike Grbic recorded a hat trick, while Quinn Mulligan produced a goal and three assists. Goaltender Dominic Pascucci stopped 21 of 22 shots.

Labeda Qinetic Legends 3, New Jersey Jagaloons 2

Qinetic improved to 2-0 in one of the day's closest games. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime before the Legends edged ahead in the second. Sean Hart accounted for all three Qinetic goals, completing the hat trick with a late power-play goal. Sean Connolly made 16 saves in the win.

Empire State Rink Rat Legends 5, ISCA Grizzlies 3

Empire State moved to 2-0 by building a 3-1 first-half lead and holding off ISCA the rest of the way. Jim McGrath recorded a goal and two assists, while Bryan Conklin added a goal and an assist. Matthew Levy stopped 18 of 21 shots for the Legends.

Long Island Rink Rat Blazers 4, Tri-State Mach1 Dopermen 3 — OT

The first overtime game of the Minor season was one of the day's most entertaining contests. Tri-State led 1-0 after the first half before the teams combined for five second-half goals to force overtime tied at three. John Astle scored twice for Long Island, and Matt Clancy delivered the overtime winner to move the Blazers to 2-0.

Suffolk Sting 7, Champion Impact 2

Suffolk continued its dominant opening stretch against a Champion team coming off a victory. The Sting led 3-1 at halftime and added four more in the second. Ryan Standard scored twice and added an assist, while Jack Rhein had a goal and an assist. Goaltender Dan Petroro stopped 12 of 14 shots.

Fusion Blizzard 9, East Coast Rebellion 6

Fusion and the Rebellion produced one of the day's wildest offensive games. The Blizzard emerged from a nine-goal first half with a 5-4 lead before outscoring the Rebellion 4-2 in the second. Drew Skotarczak had two goals and an assist, Avery Klotz collected three assists, and both Mike Grbic and Quinn Mulligan scored twice.

East Coast Capital Snipers 4, New Jersey Jagaloons 1

The Snipers rebounded from their loss to Fusion with a strong defensive performance. The game was tied 1-1 after the first half before the Snipers scored three unanswered in the second. Four different Capital Snipers scored, while Daniel Splendore had two assists and goaltender David Wax stopped 18 of 19 shots.

Labeda Qinetic Legends 9, ISCA Grizzlies 5

ISCA actually carried a 4-3 lead into halftime, but Qinetic completely flipped the game in the second half, scoring six times while allowing only one. Nicolas Schlegel exploded for three goals and three assists, while Sean Hart added two goals and two assists. The comeback pushed Qinetic to 3-0.

Empire State Rink Rat Legends 9, Tri-State Mach1 Dopermen 3

Empire State built a commanding 6-2 advantage in the first half and never looked back. Ryan Hoffner scored four goals and added an assist, while Joseph Mazzie and Frank Florio each recorded three-point games. The victory moved Empire State to 3-0 heading into its final game.

Champion Impact 5, Long Island Rink Rat Blazers 3

After a 1-1 opening half, Champion took control with four goals in the second. Mike Prainito scored twice, while Rory Sheppard contributed a goal and an assist and Chris Rosso added two assists. Greg Braska stopped 15 of 18 shots as Impact earned its second win.

Suffolk Sting 8, Mid Atlantic Mystic Storm 1

Suffolk improved to 3-0 with another convincing effort, leading 3-1 at halftime before scoring five unanswered goals in the second. Ryan Gauggel and Brett Nicholson each recorded two goals and an assist, while Josh Roland added a goal and two assists. Petroro allowed just one goal on 14 shots.

New Jersey Jagaloons 3, East Coast Rebellion 2

The Jagaloons finally broke through in another tight game, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime and matching the Rebellion goal-for-goal in the second. Dom Pearsall, Antonio Martiniello and Rob Robol supplied the New Jersey goals. Goaltender Salvatore Criscuolo was the difference, making 21 saves on 23 shots.

East Coast Capital Snipers 6, ISCA Grizzlies 1

The Snipers closed their first PIHA Minor event with a strong all-around performance. They led 3-1 at the break and scored the only three goals of the second half. Andrew Ohman finished with two goals and three assists, Damon Datlo added two goals and an assist, and John Hoisik recorded a goal and two assists. David Wax stopped 14 of 15 shots.

Labeda Qinetic Legends 6, Tri-State Mach1 Dopermen 2

Qinetic completed its perfect afternoon by taking a 3-2 first-half lead and shutting Tri-State out the rest of the way. Bryan Whelan scored twice, while Nicolas Schlegel collected three assists. Jonathan Berghorn stopped 21 of 23 shots as Qinetic finished the crossover 4-0.

Champion Impact 8, Empire State Rink Rat Legends 3

Two teams carrying strong records into their final game met in a matchup that Champion took control of almost immediately. Impact scored six times in the opening half and cruised from there. Mike Prainito put together a huge six-point game with a goal and five assists, while Rory Sheppard scored twice and James Kelly had a goal and two assists.

Long Island Rink Rat Blazers 8, Mid Atlantic Mystic Storm 1

Long Island finished its day on a high note, scoring four goals in each half. Matt Clancy, Alessandro Costantino and John Astle each scored twice, while the Blazers received contributions throughout the lineup. Antonio Lepore was outstanding in goal, stopping 23 of 24 shots.

Suffolk Sting 9, Fusion Blizzard 2

Suffolk saved one of its biggest individual performances for the final game of the night. After leading 2-1 at halftime, the Sting erupted for seven goals in the second half. Ryan Gauggel scored five times, while Ryan Standard added two goals and an assist. Petroro stopped 14 of 16 shots as Suffolk completed a perfect 4-0 day.

Individual Standouts

With four games compressed into one day, Saturday's crossover required depth, conditioning and consistency. Several players separated themselves with exceptional production.

Ryan Gauggel — Suffolk Sting

Gauggel finished his four-game afternoon with nine goals and two assists for 11 points. He scored in all four games and closed the event with an incredible five-goal performance against Fusion Blizzard.

Nicolas Schlegel — Labeda Qinetic Legends

Schlegel was a central part of Qinetic's perfect 4-0 day, totaling four goals and seven assists for 11 points. His biggest performance came in the 9-5 comeback against ISCA, where he recorded a hat trick and three assists.

Bryan Conklin — Empire State Rink Rat Legends

Conklin also produced 11 points, finishing with seven goals and four assists. The majority came in Empire State's opener, where he erupted for four goals and two assists against the Jagaloons. He scored in all four Empire games.

Sean Hart — Labeda Qinetic Legends

Hart finished the crossover with seven goals and three assists for 10 points. He scored all three Qinetic goals in the 3-2 victory over New Jersey and followed that with four points against ISCA.

Josh Roland and Colin Hite — Suffolk Sting

Suffolk's depth was on full display throughout the afternoon. Roland finished with five goals and five assists, while Hite totaled four goals and six assists, giving both players 10 points during Suffolk's undefeated event.

Mike Prainito — Champion Impact

Prainito was a major factor in Champion's 3-1 start. The defenseman totaled three goals and six assists for nine points, highlighted by his one-goal, five-assist performance in the 8-3 victory over previously unbeaten Empire State.

Sean Connolly — Labeda Qinetic Legends

Connolly went 3-0 in his three starts, beginning the season with a 15-save shutout against Fusion. He followed it with victories over the Jagaloons and ISCA before Jonathan Berghorn handled Qinetic's fourth win of the day.

David Wax — East Coast Capital Snipers

Wax was excellent in his two appearances for the Snipers, allowing just two goals on 34 shots. He stopped 18 of 19 against the Jagaloons and 14 of 15 against ISCA as Capital finished the day 3-1.

Early Division Picture

Four games do not define a 20-game regular season, but Saturday certainly gave both divisions an early shape.

In the Metropolitan Division, Suffolk Sting and Labeda Qinetic Legends both leave Long Island at 4-0. Suffolk's start was particularly impressive, outscoring its four opponents 35-6.

Behind them, the East Coast Capital Snipers, Empire State Rink Rat Legends and Long Island Rink Rat Blazers each finished 3-1, creating immediate depth at the top of the division. East Coast Rebellion finished its first Minor event at 1-3.

The Mid-Atlantic Division was led by Champion Impact at 3-1, with its only loss coming against undefeated Suffolk. Fusion Blizzard finished 2-2, including impressive wins over the Capital Snipers and Rebellion.

The New Jersey Jagaloons went 1-3, although three of their four games were decided by three goals or fewer. Mid Atlantic Mystic Storm and ISCA Grizzlies finished 0-4, while Tri-State Mach1 Dopermen went winless but pushed Long Island into overtime before falling 4-3.

For a crossover played on the first day of the season, the results provided plenty of early intrigue. The Metropolitan Division emerged with five teams winning at least three of their four games, while Champion established itself immediately at the top of the Mid-Atlantic race.

The Storm Outside, Hockey Inside

Perhaps the most remarkable accomplishment of the day was simply getting all of it completed.

A tropical storm battered Long Island throughout Saturday, creating difficult travel conditions and plenty of uncertainty before the event. But inside Skate Safe America, the schedule never missed a beat.

Two rinks.

Twelve teams.

Twenty-four games.

And an entire opening crossover completed without interruption.

After an offseason of preparation and anticipation, the players finally got the opportunity they had been waiting for — and once the puck dropped, the weather outside became secondary to the hockey being played inside.

Next Up: Colonial Division Opens October 3

The Northeast Minor season continues Saturday, October 3, when the Colonial Division opens its 2026-27 campaign at Rockville Sportsplex.

With the Metropolitan, Mid-Atlantic and Delaware Valley teams now underway, the Colonial Division will get its first opportunity to take the floor as the opening stretch of the PIHA Minor season continues.

For the teams leaving Long Island, there are still 16 regular-season games ahead.

But after a full day of crossover hockey — played through a tropical storm and highlighted by undefeated starts, huge individual performances, an overtime thriller and plenty of scoring — the first picture of the 2026-27 PIHA Northeast Minor season is beginning to come into focus.
