Metropolitan Division Goes 18–6 in Final Skate Safe Minor Crossover

OLD BETHPAGE, NY — Skate Safe America hosted its final PIHA Northeast Minor crossover festival of the 2026-27 regular season Saturday, October 24, and the Metropolitan Division made sure its Long Island finale was a memorable one.

Twelve of the Northeast Region's 24 Minor teams gathered in Old Bethpage for the second of six cross-division festivals, this time matching the six Metropolitan Division clubs against the six teams from the Delaware Valley.

Each team played four games exclusively against opponents from the opposite division, producing another 24-game marathon across Skate Safe's two rinks.

When it was finished, the Metropolitan Division had delivered a commanding performance.

Metropolitan teams went 18-6 against the Delaware Valley and outscored their opponents 102-70. Four Metropolitan clubs — East Coast Capital Snipers, Labeda Qinetic Legends, Empire State Rink Rat Legends and Suffolk Sting — finished a perfect 4-0.

The Delaware Valley still found success throughout the afternoon, with every one of its six teams earning at least one victory. South Jersey Geese Chasers, Freedom HC, New Jersey Assault, Unify New Jersey Wolfpack, Champion Trojan Pandas and Champion Trash Pandas all found their way into the win column.

The event also produced three overtime games, several one-goal finishes, two shutouts and some enormous individual performances as the Northeast's expanded crossover format continued to provide new matchups across divisional lines.

Individual Standouts

Dylan Marszaek — East Coast Capital Snipers

Marszaek was one of the event's most productive players and a driving force behind Capital's perfect afternoon.

He finished the four-game crossover with six goals and five assists for 11 points.

His biggest performance came against Unify, when he recorded a hat trick and two assists, and he also produced three points in Capital's opening victory.

Marszaek's combination with James Van Eron helped the Snipers score 22 goals in four games.

Luka Viola — South Jersey Geese Chasers

Despite South Jersey finishing 1-3, Viola matched Marszaek with one of the most productive individual days of the event.

Viola recorded seven goals and four assists for 11 points.

He opened with two goals and two assists against the Blazers, added a goal and an assist against Empire, scored twice against Qinetic and finished with another two goals against Capital.

He recorded multiple points in all four games.

James Van Eron — East Coast Capital Snipers

Van Eron finished directly behind Marszaek with six goals and four assists for 10 points.

He opened the day with a hat trick and an assist against the Trash Pandas, added two goals and an assist against Unify and closed with a three-point performance against South Jersey.

Capital's 4-0 record was powered by one of the deepest offensive groups in attendance.

Sean Hart — Labeda Qinetic Legends

Hart was the event's premier goal scorer.

The Qinetic defenseman scored nine goals in four games, including two goals in each of the Legends' first three games before recording a hat trick against Freedom.

His opening game included the overtime winner against New Jersey Assault, and he also scored shorthanded against Unify.

Nine goals. Four games. Four victories.

Steve Sharkey and Shane Reilly — Labeda Qinetic Legends

Qinetic's perfect afternoon involved much more than Hart's goal scoring.

Steve Sharkey finished with one goal and seven assists for eight points, while Shane Reilly totaled one goal and six assists for seven points.

Reilly's best game came against South Jersey, when he produced a goal and three assists, while Sharkey collected three-point performances against both New Jersey Assault and Freedom.

Ryan Gauggel and Ryan Standard — Suffolk Sting

Suffolk continued its unbeaten start with major production from two familiar names.

Across the three games for which individual scoring statistics were recorded, Gauggel finished with five goals and two assists, while Standard collected three goals and four assists.

Gauggel's hat trick highlighted the 8-2 win over the Trojan Pandas. Standard had four points in that game and added three more in Suffolk's 6-0 shutout of the Trash Pandas.

Bryan Conklin and Frank Florio — Empire State Rink Rat Legends

Empire's offense was more spread out, but Conklin and Florio emerged late.

Florio finished with two goals and four assists, collecting three points in each of Empire's final two games.

In Suffolk's three games containing complete shot statistics, he stopped 38 of 41 shots, including a 16-save performance in the overtime victory over Freedom and a 13-save shutout against the Trash Pandas.

The official final game against New Jersey Assault was recorded as a 1-0 Suffolk win without individual shot statistics.

David Wax — East Coast Capital Snipers

Wax went 3-0 in his three appearances for Capital.

He stopped 15 of 16 against New Jersey Assault, 13 of 15 against Unify and 14 of 18 against South Jersey, giving the Snipers consistent goaltending behind their high-powered offense.

Metropolitan Division Makes a Statement

Saturday's most striking number was not produced by any individual player.

It was 18-6.

Metropolitan teams won three out of every four crossover games against the Delaware Valley and finished with a 102-70 advantage in goals.

Capital, Qinetic, Empire State and Suffolk combined to go 16-0.

Long Island added another victory, and New England contributed an overtime win over the Trash Pandas.

The Delaware Valley's six wins were spread evenly across the division — every one of its teams earned exactly one victory. Three of the Delaware Valley's losses also came in overtime, demonstrating that the 18-6 final count did include several games that could have gone either way.

Standings Begin to Separate

Saturday also created significant separation in the Metropolitan standings.

Suffolk Sting and Labeda Qinetic Legends entered the event at 4-0 after their opening crossover against the Mid-Atlantic. Both swept Saturday's four-game schedule and now sit 8-0 through eight games.

East Coast Capital Snipers and Empire State Rink Rat Legends entered at 3-1 and also swept Saturday, moving both clubs to 7-1.

Long Island Rink Rat Blazers moved to 4-4, while New England Rebellion now has two victories through its first eight games, with Saturday also producing an overtime loss.

The strength at the top of the Metropolitan Division has become increasingly clear: Suffolk, Qinetic, Capital and Empire have combined for a 30-2 record through the first eight games of their respective seasons.

The Delaware Valley entered Saturday with South Jersey at 4-0, Freedom at 3-1, New Jersey Assault at 2-2 and the three remaining teams at 1-3. Saturday tightened that race considerably.

South Jersey now sits at 5-3, while Freedom's results move it to 4-3-1. New Jersey Assault stands at 3-4-1, Champion Trash Pandas at 2-5-1, and Unify New Jersey Wolfpack and Champion Trojan Pandas each have two victories through eight games.

There is still more than half of the 20-game regular season remaining, but Saturday showed how quickly expanded crossover play can reshape the divisional picture.

Skate Safe's Crossover Run Comes to an End

Saturday also marked the end of an important early-season stretch at Skate Safe America.

The Long Island facility hosted the Metropolitan–Mid-Atlantic crossover on September 26 and followed it four weeks later with Saturday's Metropolitan–Delaware Valley matchup.

Those were the first two of the Northeast's six Minor crossover festivals.

Now the crossover schedule shifts south.

The remaining four crossover festivals will all be played at Marple Sports Arena in Broomall, Pennsylvania, beginning November 14 when the Mid-Atlantic and Delaware Valley Divisions collide.

That will be followed by Metropolitan vs. Colonial on November 21, Mid-Atlantic vs. Colonial on December 12 and Delaware Valley vs. Colonial on January 9. The expanded format gives every Northeast Minor team 12 crossover games — 60 percent of its 20-game regular season — and guarantees that every team sees opponents from each of the other three Northeast divisions.

Skate Safe's role in the crossover schedule may be finished for this season, but the effects of the two massive Long Island events will be felt throughout the standings for months to come.

Next Up: Mid-Atlantic vs. Delaware Valley at Marple

The Northeast crossover series resumes Saturday, November 14 at Marple Sports Arena, where the Mid-Atlantic and Delaware Valley Divisions will meet for another 24-game slate.

For the Delaware Valley, it will be an opportunity to rebound after a difficult afternoon on Long Island.

For the Mid-Atlantic, it will be its next chance to measure itself against another part of the Northeast.

And for the league as a whole, it will begin a four-event run at Marple that will ultimately complete the most extensive crossover schedule PIHA's Northeast Minor Region has used.

After two crossover festivals, one thing is already clear:

The expanded schedule is doing exactly what it was designed to do — putting more teams against more opponents and giving the Northeast a much clearer picture of where everyone stands.
