Colonial Division Opens with Action-Packed Day in Rockville
ROCKVILLE, MD — The final piece of the PIHA Northeast Minor Division puzzle fell into place Saturday, October 3, as the Colonial Division officially opened its 2026-27 season at Michael & Sons Sportsplex in Rockville, Maryland.
Four teams — the Chesapeake Baymen, Nova Blades, SK Marple Gladiators and Philly Frostbite — each played four games during an eight-game opening-day slate, and it did not take long for the division to produce some memorable moments.
Nova and Chesapeake each collected three victories, while Marple rebounded from two close losses to finish the afternoon with back-to-back wins. The eight-game schedule featured an overtime winner, a shootout decision, two shutouts and several outstanding individual performances.
Perhaps most importantly, with the Colonial Division now underway, all four PIHA Northeast Minor divisions have officially begun their 2026-27 seasons.

Marple refused to go quietly. Johnny Miller and Jack Phelan scored in the first half before Michael Quaile and John Bright added second-half goals to pull the Gladiators within one. Nova was able to protect the lead over the closing minutes and escape with a 5-4 victory.
Chesapeake Baymen 3, SK Marple Gladiators 2 — OT
The first overtime game of the Colonial season arrived almost immediately.
Marple took a 1-0 first-half lead on a goal from Johnny Miller, but Chesapeake battled back behind second-half goals from Ayden Staats and James Krolikowski. Don Susini answered for Marple, sending the game to overtime tied 2-2.
Just over a minute into the extra session, Porter Truman scored the game-winner, with Shane Sweeney drawing the assist, to give Chesapeake its second victory.
Julio Bana Fernandez stopped 19 of 21 shots for the Baymen, while Marple's Tommy Molloy made 17 saves.
Nova Blades 4, Philly Frostbite 2
Frostbite answered a difficult opening game with a much stronger effort against Nova.
The teams went to halftime tied 2-2. Anthony Mancino and Dan Rock scored for Philly, while Bryan Golnek and Liam Hanna answered for Nova.
The second half belonged to Sean Milby. Milby scored both Nova goals — including one with just one second remaining — as the Blades pulled away for the 4-2 win.
Christian Moore stopped 11 of 13 shots in the Nova net.
SK Marple Gladiators 7, Philly Frostbite 0
After dropping their first two games by a combined two goals, the Gladiators broke through in a big way.
Marple scored three times in the first half and added four more in the second. Johnny Miller scored twice and added an assist, Anthony Amato collected a goal and three assists, and Jack Phelan scored twice. Scott Fuchs and Don Susini also scored.
The Gladiators spread the offense throughout the lineup, with seven different players recording at least one point.
Meanwhile, Tommy Molloy stopped all 14 shots he faced to record the shutout and Marple's first victory of the season.
Nova Blades 10, Chesapeake Baymen 3
Two unbeaten teams met in the sixth game of the afternoon, but Nova quickly took control.
The Blades scored five times in each half in the highest-scoring performance of the event. Liam Hanna delivered the day's biggest single-game offensive performance with a hat trick and two assists for five points.
Bryan Golnek scored twice and added an assist, while Noah Loggia finished with two goals and an assist and Sean Milby contributed a goal and two assists.
Chesapeake received goals from James Krolikowski and Ayden Staats, while the official game sheet also credits goaltender Julio Bana Fernandez with a goal.
Nova's 10-3 victory moved the Blades to 3-0 and handed Chesapeake its first loss.
Chesapeake Baymen 8, Philly Frostbite 6
Frostbite's final game turned into an offensive shootout.
Chesapeake led 4-3 after the first half, and both teams scored four times after the break as Philly continued to stay within striking distance.
Ayden Staats took over the game for Chesapeake, scoring four goals, including three during the second half. Porter Truman added a goal and two assists, while James Ayres collected three assists.
Frostbite received two goals each from Nick Bruno, Matt Yothers and Dan Rock, with Yothers also adding an assist.
In the end, Chesapeake had just enough offense to earn an 8-6 victory and finish its opening day with three wins.
SK Marple Gladiators 4, Nova Blades 3 — Shootout
The final game of the afternoon delivered perhaps the day's best finish.
Nova jumped out to a 3-2 first-half lead behind a goal from Liam Hanna and two from Reese Tibbs. Marple received goals from Scott Fuchs and Don Susini.
The Gladiators tied the game in the second half when Johnny Miller scored, and neither team could find the winner before the game moved to a shootout.
Nova's Liam Hanna converted his opportunity, but Marple answered with successful attempts from Jack Phelan and Don Susini, giving the Gladiators the shootout victory.
Both goaltenders were strong through 30 minutes of play, with Tommy Molloy and John Beltrane each recording 14 saves on 17 shots.
The result gave Marple its second consecutive victory while handing Nova its only defeat of the day — and even that required a shootout.
Individual Standouts
Ayden Staats — Chesapeake Baymen
Staats put together one of the strongest all-around offensive performances of opening day, finishing with seven goals and two assists for nine points.
He recorded three points in Chesapeake's opening win, scored again in the overtime victory over Marple, added another against Nova and then exploded for four goals against Philly Frostbite in his final game.
Liam Hanna — Nova Blades
Hanna was a major reason Nova finished with three wins. He totaled six goals and two assists for eight points, scoring in all four games.
His signature performance came in Nova's 10-3 victory over Chesapeake, when he produced a hat trick and two assists. Hanna also converted Nova's lone successful shootout attempt against Marple in the finale.
Johnny Miller — SK Marple Gladiators
Miller was Marple's most consistent offensive threat, recording five goals and three assists for eight points.
He scored in all four games, including two goals and an assist during Marple's 7-0 win over Frostbite. Miller also scored the tying goal in the second half against Nova that eventually allowed the Gladiators to win the finale in a shootout.
Porter Truman — Chesapeake Baymen
Truman finished with four goals and three assists for seven points. He scored twice and added an assist in the opener, delivered the overtime winner against Marple and recorded another three-point performance against Frostbite.
Sean Milby — Nova Blades
Milby accumulated three goals and four assists for seven points, highlighted by a two-goal performance against Frostbite and a goal and two assists during Nova's 10-goal outburst against Chesapeake.
He then added two assists in the final game against Marple.
Tommy Molloy — SK Marple Gladiators
Few players were busier than the Marple goaltender.
Molloy played all four Gladiators games, facing 79 shots and making 68 saves. His afternoon included a 14-save shutout against Frostbite, 23 saves in the opener against Nova and 14 more during Marple's shootout victory in the rematch.
With Marple playing three games decided by one goal, Molloy's work in net was a major part of the Gladiators' ability to recover from an 0-2 start and finish with consecutive victories.
Paul Gray — Chesapeake Baymen
Gray made the most of his appearance, turning aside all 21 shots against Philly Frostbite in the first game of the afternoon. His shutout set the tone for Chesapeake's 3-1 opening day.
Early Colonial Picture Takes Shape
After four games, Nova and Chesapeake each leave Rockville with three victories.
Nova won its first three games before falling to Marple in a shootout, meaning the Blades' only defeat required extra time. Chesapeake also earned three victories, including an overtime win over Marple, with its lone setback coming against Nova.
Marple's results tell a different story. The Gladiators opened with a one-goal regulation loss and a one-goal overtime loss before responding with a 7-0 shutout of Frostbite and a shootout victory over Nova. With three of their four games decided by a single goal, Marple showed how little may separate the top of the Colonial Division.
Philly Frostbite finished the day without a victory, but the scores don't tell the entire story. After being shut out twice, Frostbite generated six goals in its finale and pushed Chesapeake throughout an entertaining 8-6 game.
Four games represent a significant opening chunk of the 20-game regular season, but Saturday's results suggest the Colonial race could provide plenty of intrigue as the year progresses.
All Four Northeast Divisions Are Underway
With Saturday's Colonial opener complete, every division in the PIHA Northeast Minor Region has now begun its 2026-27 regular season.
The Metropolitan and Mid-Atlantic Divisions opened with their crossover event at Skate Safe America, the Delaware Valley got underway at Inman Sports Complex, and now the Colonial Division has joined them following its eight-game opening slate in Rockville.
There is still a long road ahead before the Northeast postseason picture comes into focus, but the first results are officially in across the entire region.
Next Up: Piedmont Division Opens October 10
The PIHA Minor schedule continues Saturday, October 10, when the Piedmont Division kicks off its 2026-27 season at Volunteer Park.
For the Northeast, attention now turns toward the next round of games and the crossover schedule ahead. For the four Colonial teams leaving Rockville, the first four games are complete — and after overtime, a shootout, two shutouts and plenty of offense, the race for the division has officially begun.
