09/30 Skate Safe Recap (Minor)

by Anthony Flynn

The first east coast minor action of the season took place Saturday at Skate Safe America.  The lead up to the event wasn't without drama, as major regional flooding had the event in question in the days leading up.  A three hour delay proved to the the right formula, as teams we able to travel freely and get to the first event of the season.

This festival, half of the Atlantic division came up to play half of the Northeast division, in the first of a handful of cross division festivals this season.  Skate Safe played host as the Marple Gladiators, along with new minor teams the Champion Trash Pandas, and the Philadelphia Deuces all traveled to play the Suffolk Sting and both Empire State Legends minor teams.

Historically the minor division has been a very competitive division and Saturday proved to be no different.  Five of the first eight games went into overtime, two of which went to double overtime, and one mad it all the way to a shootout.  This forecasts yet another great season of competition in the PIHA minor division.

Highlighting the day, the brand new organization the Trash Pandas earned themselves four wins, although two in overtime.  The Suffolk Sting also had a good day, earning three victories, with one of those in overtime.  No one finished the event without at least one point, leaving everyone with the feeling that the minor division is wide open for the taking.
